A textbook included photographs of some of these manuscripts. Professor Drew Gilpin Faust, an American historian, asked her college class what they thought of the book. One student said the photographs were not very helpful to him, because he couldn\u2019t read cursive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat?\u201d the professor said to herself. \u201cHad I heard him correctly?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cannot read cursive.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n She then asked the class, \u201cWho else can\u2019t read cursive?\u201d About two-thirds of the class raised their hands. \u201cAnd who can\u2019t write it?\u201d she asked. Even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to The Atlantic, <\/em>cursive was omitted from Common Core standards for education back in 2010. At that point, handwriting instruction had already been in decline for some time. Laptops and tablets were everywhere, so students began getting lessons in keyboarding. They were using their hands to type on a keyboard instead of writing on a pad of paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The result? Many students today cannot read a Civil War-era manuscript, or anything else written in cursive. We live in a cursive-less world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Pharisees also had a hard time reading what was in front of them, but for a different reason. In today\u2019s Gospel, they approach Jesus in the temple in Jerusalem. They are trying to lay a trap for Jesus, much like the person who asks you, \u201cHave you stopped beating your spouse?\u201d If you say \u201cyes,\u201d you are in trouble, and if you say \u201cno,\u201d then you have an even worse<\/em> problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Pharisees say: \u201cTeacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth\u201d (22:16). They lay it on pretty thick, describing Jesus in glowing terms. They hope this praise will lower his resistance before they attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cTell us, then,\u201d they ask, \u201cwhat you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?\u201d (v. 17). This sounds like a simple question, but it\u2019s really a loaded question. The Pharisees figure that if Jesus approves<\/em> of paying taxes, then he\u2019ll offend the people who are trying to rebel against the Roman Empire. But if he disapproves<\/em> of paying taxes, then he could be reported to the empire and maybe even arrested. They are saying, in effect, \u201cDo you support rebellion or Rome?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n They know that either choice can be used against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There were three taxes the Romans extracted from the Jewish people. There was a ground tax – a man had to give to the government one-tenth of his grain and one-fifth of the oil and wine which he produced. There was an income tax – one percent of a person\u2019s income. And there was a poll tax – every male person from age fourteen to 65 and every female from age twelve to 75 had to pay this tax, which amounted to one denarius or one day\u2019s wages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The tax here in question was this poll tax \u2013 one denarius, one day\u2019s wages a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus replies, \u201cShow me the coin used for the tax.\u201d They give him a denarius, a Roman coin. \u201cWhose head is this, and whose title?\u201d They answer: \u201cThe emperor\u2019s.\u201d Then Jesus says to them, \u201cGive therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor\u2019s, and to God the things that are God\u2019s\u201d (vv. 19-21). He makes them read the writing on the coin, and he uses their failure to comprehend it as a way to slip out of their trap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This story is popular because it shows Jesus outwitting his opponents with cleverness and clarity of thought. But this tax question does more than reveal that Jesus was tough to manipulate. The story challenges us to discover for ourselves what it means to give to God the things that belong to God. And like those college students struggling to understand cursive \u2014 where a few letters may be recognizable but the connections between them are unfamiliar \u2014 Matthew\u2019s message may not be entirely clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At first glance, it appears that Jesus is giving us a neat, clean way to serve both government and God. Give the emperor one thing and God another thing. Keep them straight; don\u2019t let them get mixed up; focus on spiritual things on Sunday, and on secular things Monday through Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMaintain separate silos,\u201d Jesus seems to be saying. \u201cDon\u2019t let politics and religion mix. Respect the separation of church and state.\u201d Jesus appears to be encouraging us to keep these important parts of our lives separate, divided into neat, clean and orderly compartments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But if we jump to that conclusion, we are not learning to read the coin. What is written on the coin is a title, \u201cTiberius Caesar, august son of the divine Augustus and high priest.\u201d When Jesus says, give \u201cto the emperor the things that are the emperor\u2019s,\u201d he is really saying to get rid of the coin. Give it back to the person who owns it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You could say the same about the American dollars that we carry in our wallets. At the top of each bill are the words, \u201cFederal Reserve Note.\u201d The note is \u201clegal tender for all debts, public and private.\u201d Yes, we use it, but it belongs to the State. At the end of its life, it goes back to the Federal Reserve. We give to the State the things that are the State\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After speaking of the emperor, Jesus says, give \u201cto God the things that are God\u2019s\u201d (v. 21). This is a perplexing phrase, because there is no tax we can pay to God, and no clear assessment of what we owe the Lord in terms of worship, stewardship or charity. Giving to the emperor is easy; giving to God is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The head on the Roman coin is an image of Tiberius Caesar. But is there a similar coin that contains the image of God? No, there\u2019s not. Jesus would say that we should look at ourselves and look at our neighbors. Each of us is made in the image and likeness of God. We are stamped with God\u2019s image, just as a Roman coin is stamped with the emperor\u2019s image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When we give to God the things that are God\u2019s, we are offering to God our complete selves \u2014 body, mind, soul, heart. We are holding nothing back, seven days a week. We do not give to God only the things that are in the divine silo. No, we give to God everything we have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Our Creator has placed us here so we may make of our very lives an offering, fragrant and pleasing. We are called to generosity: to be generous with our time as well as our treasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A denarius, in this period at least, bears the image of Caesar and therefore belongs to Caesar. A human being bears the image of God and therefore belongs to God. You belong to God \u2014 and not only just that, but you are as good a way for any of us to see the beauty of the God who made you than any stained-glass window, painting, or statue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n When we look at each other, or in the mirror, we tend to see the inscriptions that our business with the world has left on us: you are what you look like, what you have, what you wear, what you do, the company you keep. Nevertheless, underneath all those inscriptions is a much deeper mark: the watery sign of a cross made once upon a time on the forehead. All those faces are a part of your face, when you begin to see the image that God sees, the image engraved in the palm of the hand of the God who, in Jesus, stands behind us with full faith and credit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Back in the third century, Rome was still the dominant power and Christians were undergoing persecution. In the year 258, the emperor Valerian commanded his Imperial treasury to confiscate all money and possessions belonging to the Christian church. Responding to this threat, the pope put a young man named Lawrence in charge of the church\u2019s riches, and he also gave him responsibility for the church\u2019s outreach to the poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Roman emperor demanded that Lawrence turn over all the riches of the church and gave him three days to round it up. Lawrence quickly sold all the church\u2019s valuables and gave the money to widows and to the sick. He then distributed all the church\u2019s property to the poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On the third day, the emperor summoned Lawrence to his palace and asked for the wealth of the church. With great fanfare, Lawrence entered the palace, stopped, and then gestured back to the door. Streaming in behind him was a crowd of Christians. He proclaimed, \u201cThese are the treasures of the church.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yes, the treasures of the church are the people made in the image of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Like the Pharisees who questioned Jesus, we are challenged to understand the coin. Look at a U.S. nickel made after 2005. You will see the word \u201cLiberty\u201d \u2013 written in cursive – next to the image of Thomas Jefferson. The word reminds us that we are free to be generous in our giving, for we are the hands and feet of Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The other phrase on the nickel is \u201cIn God We Trust.\u201d This phrase reminds us to rely on our good and gracious God, and to believe in God\u2019s constant care. We trust in God \u2014 not in Tiberius Caesar, Wall Street, The New York Times<\/em>, or the government. We trust that God will care for us, in the future as in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Pharisees looked at a coin and got a message. So can we. We can give to God the things that are God\u2019s \u2014 our whole body, soul, mind and heart. And we can put our trust in a loving and generous God, with complete liberty to support God\u2019s work in the world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Letters. Diaries.
